So the government and Maoist finally signed the peace accord. Today, 21st of November has been one of the important dates in World history, considerably the Nepalese history. With Maoist agreeing to end the 12 year long so called people's war and joining the competitive politics I can see better future of Nepal in days to come. These 12 years long insurgency has created substantial loss to the country. It has taken more than 13000 lives, destroyed all the physical infrastructures and created the psychological fear of the war in the children who are to lead country tomorrow. It will take more periods to reconstruct the losses than the time it took to destroy them.
People had already begun to get pessimistic about the halt of the war as other problems had started to show up in the political scenario. King Birendra and his families' massacre seize of power from then elected prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba by the king Gyanendra, the royal coup, overgrowing power of the military had all added to the political turmoil already existing due to Maoist. So the situation of the country was worsening. Human rights were at the verge of end, country's economy was deteriorating, tourist had almost ceased to come and people were forced to have a life of internal refugees in their own country as they were displaced from their place due to the war.
With the success of April revolution the hope of new Nepal was implanted on us. We started to dream the end of the war, the arrival of new Nepal. And yes, hats off to our 85 year old PM, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala, he finally did it. Now with the position of the king being questioned and so called feudal system at its end, we now dare to dream peaceful, developed and tranquil led new Nepal. 365 year old rule of the King seems to be at its last. Dawn of the new republic Nepal seems very close. We do have every right to be skeptical about Maoist for the precious 12 years that is almost irreversible. However, as they have promised to abide by the multiparty democracy system and compete politically in front of people rather than in jungles we need to be optimistic. We have given everyone chance to show their best, be it king or the other leaders. Why not give a chance to Maoist this time?
